FIU Releases New Environmental Crime Typology
09 January 2026
The Isle of Man Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has published a new Environmental Crime Typologies and Red Flags report, offering the Island’s finance sector insight into how criminals use international financial centres to launder proceeds from environmental offences.
Environmental crime, including illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, unregulated fishing and pollution offences, continues to grow rapidly as a global illicit market. The FIU notes that these activities are increasingly linked to complex financial flows that may pass through jurisdictions like the Isle of Man, even when the underlying crimes occur overseas.
The new document provides practical red flags and typologies drawn from suspicious activity reports, intelligence-sharing through the Egmont Group, law enforcement input, OSINT, and feedback from the Island’s regulated sector. It aims to help the finance sector better identify suspicious behaviour connected to environmental crime.
By enhancing awareness of these risks, the FIU seeks to strengthen the Island’s collective ability to detect and disrupt illicit funds linked to environmental harm, ensuring the Isle of Man continues to uphold robust global standards in financial integrity and environmental responsibility.
